The Writer’s ADHD

I was a hyperactive child. My parents are very polite about it, but I suspect I was an absolute nightmare and the surviving video from that era bears out my suspicions. When I discovered reading, I calmed down and learned to channel my energy more creatively. However, I'm still easily influenced by orange juice or a sugar high, and I probably talk more than is strictly necessary or desirable. When it comes to writing, I often struggle to focus. Not on time = words = pages particularly, but more on chasing my next project instead of actually finishing the one I'm meant to be writing. (As evidenced by the fact I'm writing a blog post instead of adding pages to my latest screenplay...). But this even bleeds into those two writing basics: Format and Genre. 2011: My year with writing

This time last year, I reviewed where I was in my writing career. I thought I had written the penultimate draft of Steampunk Assassins. I was writing the first draft of The Greenwich Problem. I was planning to write a romantic comedy termed Baking Lawyer (which I abandoned due to fatal flaws). I determined that Military Monster needed a complete overall (which is still awaited.) And I put everything else on hold. And then 2011 happened. In January, I finished the first draft of The Greenwich Problem for the BBC's Laughing Stock competition. In February, Realm Pictures won the Raindance/Pepsi Max competition. This started them on the road to The Underwater Realm. In March, I was longlisted for Laughing Stock, which caused much excitement. In April, I attended the London Comedy Writers Festival, got some great advice and met some awesome creatives. A Whole New World

I've been knee-deep in development work for my projects this past month, responding to some thought-provoking notes on Steampunk Assassins from Ste Russell at Loves Me Not Films and attempting to whip The Greenwich Problem into shape before sending it out to producers. However, three opportunities came along this week that had me dusting off old projects and exploring their potential. The first was a call for feature screenplays based in and around Europe, which required writing a treatment for said screenplay. This seemed like a perfect fit for The Local, my Script Frenzy screenplay about an English doctor joining Welsh villagers in their fight against a construction company. A very "local" European story! Unfortunately, I loathe treatments and I haven't done a pass on The Local for about four months, so I needed to re-familiarise myself with the ins-and-outs of Act 2 to try and sell my story. A question of perspective

I quite like my Red Planet Prize script. It was my first television screenplay, so I'm sure it contains novice mistakes, but on the whole, I'm proud of it. Danny Stack made a post today about RPP entries: "...there were a grand total of 1,574 entries!" !!! "We're already immersed in the reading and the standard is proving to be very high indeed, making the 2nd round decisions all the more difficult." ... "...we're typically very tough on what gets through. In previous years, it's been around 20% of the entries..." Well, damn. Back to the novel then....

Lens blur

What I am lacking in is focus. Today, instead of knocking out another chapter of Overambitious Island (though the night is still young), I plotted a new six-part drama series that we will call Asylum. There is no need for this new project, it is not filling a hole of emptiness in my life, and yet it will not be left alone. So I'm going to kick it into submission and get back to my novel, like a good girl. Yeah, right....

Everything old is new again

I have successfully moved across Wales - go me! New job officially gets going next week, and while it's going to seriously cut into my writing time, it also pays pretty well. Still, like all amateurs, one day I dream of going pro. However, I take Michelle Lipton's caution that it might not all be hearts and roses when I get there. I signed up to The Bitter Script Reader's collaborative writing project. I think the last time I did something like this was at a sleepover when I was a teenager and we were trying to plan a rom-com-esque date for two oddly-named characters on a concertina piece of paper. I'm the third writer in Team Chynna, so I should receive my portion of the assignment mid-late August. In another piece of nostalgia, I completely agree with Laurence's ravings about Sherlock. Patchwork Post

I'm back from my holiday in sunny Italy - and it's raining and overcast and generally homely, which is nice. I do like it when the weather puts on a homecoming parade. However, this does mean I've been parted from my beloved laptop and my affair with Space Precinct for a week. This would mean a kick in the nads for my Red Planet Prize screenplay were it not for the fact that I boarded a train today - and therefore knocked out twelve pages. What is it about trains that makes me so productive? I need to build my own railway just to do some work. Projects are ticking over. Steampunk Assassins and Old!Robin Hood are with my director, poolside, and I'm musing over resurrecting a complicated novel with new people, culture and language that's been simmering on the hard drive for a couple of years.
